A journey into the eyes and mind of a naturalist.

Caterpillar Update

The Swallowtail Caterpillar is growing like a wind driven wildfire.  It has now entered its second instar.  An instar is a stage of growth and most caterpillars have around 5 instars until they reach their pupal stage.  The transformation between each instar includes shedding its skin.  For Swallowtails each instar reveals a very different looking caterpillar.  Mine no longer looks like a wayward bird dropping, it now looks more like an actual caterpillar.

It’s still chowing down on the Dill flowers, taking in vital proteins and nutrients from the most potent part of the plant.
